The space we chose to observe on campus is the Alumni Glenn next to the Little Chico creek. We chose this interesting space because it is close to the creek and a great way to spend a couple of minutes in between class. The first thing that you notice walking from the west side of campus is the sign that marks the beginning of the Alumni Glenn followed by a path to the right of the sign. The rocks that are laid to the right of the path define the boundaries and keep people from walking too close to the creek or into the plants. Begin to descend on the path you encounter stairs leading down to ground level that are at unusual lengths making you take a half stride before descending another level.
One of the main focal points of Alumni Glenn is the concrete slab with raised concrete structures that people can sit upon and soak up the sun. Trees and green grass surround this space and is close to the natural creek that runs through campus. When we observed people in the area, they were sitting, eating lunch, having a quick chat in between classes, or simply taking a quick nap. This is a very calming place to be because of the lush vegetation and the natural sound of the stream . Another main focal point of Alumni Glenn is the big metal Chico State structure that sits in the middle of this space, but off the path so that it is not in the way.
As you continue along this path you are brought out of the natural serenity due to a street lamp and a concrete ramp leading up to the bridge that crosses the same creek. Before you go up the ramp, there is a grassy and shady area where it looks as if people could sit and have a bite to eat or even catch a few minutes of sleep. Overall the vibe from this space is very organized and calm. People seem attracted to this space when they have a couple minutes to spare in between their classes.
The two things we did not like about the space was the awkwardness of walking down the steps to get to the actual level of the space and the lack of ground cover. Sustainable groundcovers are very to maintain while providing more visual appeal that would complete the area. This space was well designed with much respect to the environment. It provides spaces to sit and relax while still making it feel very natural by using rocks to define a path and maintaining the green foliage that surrounds it.
We found this place as a great example of how one may develop a special connection or feeling of place attachment towards it because of how everyone related themselves to it. For example, it reminded Shannon of home because of the running creek water made her think of the beach and how the sunset would reflect off the ocean just like how Chico’s bright sun glistened off the creek. Most people’s main place of attachment is where they grew up because of the emotional relationship and connection they have with it. Therefore this special place has the power to make people familiarize it with their home and build a connection to it.
The attachment that we created to this place was derived from our previous experiences with similar places. As this spot brings back memories for some of us we experience close bonding with this place. This bond can be defined as both place identity along with place attachment. The attachment comes from our first encounter with this place simply because it does in fact remind us of good previous experiences. The place identity theory is not so direct in all cases. Alumni Glenn for some can be much more than a pretty place to sit and enjoy, it can hold deeper meaning that entailed work and strategizing to create such a place. In order to identify with a place we must hold a higher fondness due to a process that caused us to get physically and emotionally involved. Place attachment and identity come from good experiences in one place or a place very similar. For us we felt to most attached to Alumni Glenn.
